How to Handle Slice for Your 3rd Shot

If you’ve ever played against someone who likes to add slice to their return of serve, then you know how frustrating it can be to deal with. 😖

In this week’s EXCLUSIVE VIDEO, I teach you precisely how to handle the slice return and hit a better third shot.

🏎️ Drive to neutralize spin

The first thing you must do is NOT try to hit a drop shot after your opponent slices the ball. The problem with trying to hit a drop is that it has too much spin on it, and you won’t be able to control it.

Instead, ALWAYS drive these balls. 💪

🤿 Get below the ball – even lower!

The next mistake many players make is they don’t get low enough. For a ball with a lot of slice, you have to get low ––– no, EVEN LOWER! 🙇‍♂️

Your paddle must be completely under the ball because you’ll want to exaggerate the topspin you put onto the ball.

🪁 Aim drive 2-3 feet higher than normal

The final part of hitting a return of serve with slice on it is that you want to aim your drive 2-3 feet higher than you normally would. This is because the ball will naturally dip because of all the spin on it.

Trust me, it might seem like it’s going to be too high, but as soon as it crosses the net, it will drop, and you’ll be okay!

🔔 Practice

Practice this with a partner and have them hit return of serves with a lot of slice—like Francesca does in the video. And just practice every step in the video. It’s going to take time, and you’re probably going to get frustrated. 😩

But once you do it, you’ll know how to handle slice for the rest of your pickleball life! 🙌

What I’m Working On Right Now

This past week, I’ve been working on… 💭

Adding a lob into my game! 🦞

When all four players are at the kitchen line dinking, experienced opponents will lean in and take as many of your balls out of the air as possible. 🧠

This makes it challenging to dink aggressively because they can attack your balls out of the air. 🔪✈️

If you lob your opponents early in the match, it will force them to play more “honestly” by having their weight centered instead of leaning in. 🤫😎

This is a great skill to add to your game. I’m having a ton of fun experimenting with it! 🎉🎉
